As well as how a flight from Boston was canceled because someone smelled an "odd smell". And a New Jersey terminal was shut down, etc. And how the recriminations have been flying around that the government failed deeply.
The thing is, no was actually hurt or injured in that Detroit incident. (Other than the guy who actually lit his groin on fire). Obviously, it could have been a terrible thing if the fire was to spread. But it didn't. And yet this is held up as something that should have been prevented.
At the same time as there is this idea that any terrorist act on a plane should be prevented, we have also had a guy walk into a federal courthouse in Las Vegas and open fire. And then someone walked into their work in Missouri and opened fire, killing three people. Both of these stories just went through the usual run of the news cycle. No one is suggesting that the government failed to realize that Timothy Hedron of Missouri was ready to do something crazy, but apparently they should have known that about Umar Abdulmullutab was. So any act of terrorism is a terrible affront, but having people blown away at work is just "the cost of doing business"?
And for that matter, as long as we are dealing with transportation related deaths, about 18,000 people die a year from drunk driving. During 2009, how many Americans died from airborne terrorism? Much less than that. What would it be like if we lived in a country where it was hard enough to get on a freeway drunk, as it was to get on an airplane carrying a bottle of shampoo?
My friend is visiting from out of town and she wants to watch the blazer/laker game tonight. Can anybody recommend a fun sporty type bar?
THANKS.
Recommend me a caterer or catering company or catering person who will come to my home bearing delicious finger food and party snacks with a minimum of fuss and a maximum of flavor and flair. Or I suppose I could drive over and pick it up. As long as its delicious!
Those damn injuries are putting the kabash on the Blazers playoff chances. They could have been this years cinderella team.

This weekend the NW Film Center kicks off the 27th edition of its annual Reel Music Film Festival, an exquisite month-long showcase of some of the greatest “musical” films in existence.
Not to be confused with the popular “musicals” film genre we are all familiar with, the Reel Music Film Festival offers a diverse line-up of films whose common themes are the exploration of the history of a wide-variety of styles of music and types of instruments, the fascinating relationship between sound and image, and the influence of music on society and culture.
I was able to preview some of this weekend’s line-up, and I have to say that all of them were a pleasure to watch. If you are looking for something to do this weekend, consider one of the following screenings:
Mighty Uke
This film is a must see for pretty much every kind of audience. It is entertaining, educational, touching and I promise it will leave you with a burning desire to get your own ukulele when you leave the theatre (which, after watching the film, you will agree is a good thing).
(Saturday 1/9, 7 PM)
Ashes of American Flags
This is a great film for any Wilco fan who wants to get to know the band more intimately, to hear/see live performances from their 2008 tour, and find out what happens behind-the-scenes. It is also a lovely story – in and of itself – about a family of traveling artists whose favorite medium is music.
(Friday 1/8 and Saturday 1/9, 9:15 PM)
*Extra Incentive*
At each screening of Ashes of American Flags, the NW Film Center is raffling off one pair of tickets for the SOLD OUT Wilco concert on February 9 at the Arlene Schnizter concert hall!
In Search of Mozart
See Mozart as you have never seen him before! This film is an entertaining and intriguing visual biography of Mozart as told through his letters, clips from grand performances of his works, and interviews with some of the world’s most renowned musical scholars.
(Sunday 1/10, 2 PM)
Cool
Travel back in time to the 1950s to discover the origins of the style of “cool”. You will be treated to awesome vintage clips of some of the masters of jazz and learn about how they persuaded everyone – musicians, artists, writers, filmmakers, even politicians – to ‘aspire to the condition of cool.” Screening followed by 1959: The Year That Changed Jazz.
(Sunday 1/10, 7 PM)
I wasn’t able to see a preview of the Neil Young Trunk Show – which is kicking off the event Friday night at 7 PM – but a fan of Neil Young since I became interested in guitar, I am excited to attend Friday night’s screening to learn more about one of America’s greatest acoustic guitarists and see footage from some of his incredible performances.
The Center is also showing Beyond Ipanema: Brazilian Waves in Global Music- a film about the incredible global influence of Brazilian music – on Sunday at 4:45 PM. I didn’t get to see a preview of this film, but it sounds like one that will surely get you dancing in your seat.
For more information about the films, to see a complete line-up for the festival, and to watch trailers of all the films, visit the NW Film Center’s Reel Film Music Festival Website. For updates and reminders during festival, follow the NW Film Center on twitter @nwfilmcenter.
Tickets
General Admission: $8 per film
Portland Art Museum Members/Students/Seniors: $7 per film
Friends of the Film Center: $5 per film
*Double features are an additional $2 per ticket*
It is recommended that you order your tickets online (links can be accessed below every film on the Reel Music Film Festival site) but tickets will also be available for purchase at the front desk by cash or check only before all screenings.

Birley Spa Bath House is about half a mile from where I live in Sheffield. I'm going to try and get down on one of the open mornings and get some pictures from inside if possible.
I took the following pictures a couple of days ago when the snow here was heaviest (so far!). There's a fair bit of light pollution on some of the pictures, but I didn't want to take them all with a flash on because of the still-falling snow. I've also included some of the lake and scenery behind the bath-house.

You can see from this pic that it was quite snowy (and a bit cold!) when I started to take the pictures. This is the front of Birley Spa Bath House.
( Cut due to image-heaviness )
There's also a house at the bottom of the drive. I don't know if the occupants act as care-takers for the bath-house, but I didn't take any pictures of this as there are still people living there.
"We started off with a statement, two minutes worth, and whereas I focussed on the excellent free health and beauty care afforded free of charge to the good people of New Mexico - "it'll cost you nada with Natla" - Mr. Arpaia launched into a garbled attack on modern medicine, denouncing as some sort of a "slaughter of the innocents" the services offered by Natla Tech. His "buzzwords"` included "stem cells", which we didn't use, "dead foetuses", all our foetuses were alive and well, and "murder of unborn children" - which as far as I knew we didn't offer as a service, although I was open to a well thought out business proposition."
That's totally something she would say/think, too. I laughed so hard I woke my mom up. Oops. It's refreshing to actually find a fandom where children and baby rabies are scarce. Granted, I run across the occasional "LARA HAS TWIN MARY SUE DAUGHTERS" story, but I'd say 98% of the fanfics I run across don't have children. ^_^ I think most players can't even compute the idea of Lara + baby (myself included). And Natla is just so many levels of awesome anyways.
*happy dance*
I have another week at home. I still have tasks that aren't about the bathroom that must be done; the list is growing. The room is coming together so very damn nice.
Funny how many things have changed as we go along with the finishing touches. The discussions have been productive, realistic and make us like this room. There haven't been necessary changes due to budget, more about what looks best to the fella who likes to splurge on his SO. What shows is a great resource for how to go ahead with the rest of the projects we have on the list.
I've teased
We're tired. Mostly I'm tired of having people in the house. Finally, today, Wayne the Tiler finished. He'd come back after several days to give us time to install the new door. He asked to use my pictures in his portfolio.
By weekend, we'll have the backsplash and mirror installed, and I'll be taking pictures. Looking back at my last update I can see where some of you might be anxious. Patience; I've had to be paitent (and tolerant o_O).
I'm also new to Portland - but I would love to make something meaningful to this community with my assignment.
What would you like me to point my, albeit small, spotlight on? Something that hasn't been done already.
